Through ageing, sun damage and an entire host of other factors, our skin loses structure. The skin, once pulled tight, may now drape over the face. Fortunately, modern cosmetic medicine has come up with a fast-acting solution that counters this tendency: derma fillers.

Understanding the Problem

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. Together with elastin, collagen creates a structure for the skin on our face. That’s why during our earlier years, the skin always looks so plump. The collagen and elastin effectively pull our skin tight across the face, allowing it stretch smoothly above the bone and muscle.

Collagen and elastin make a perfect pair. While elastin is weak, it allows the skin to stretch. The firmness of the collagen, in contrast, maintains the volume of the skin.

However, as we age, the collagen and elastin structures naturally start breaking down. When this happens, the skin loses its natural tightness which results in the skin sagging and wrinkling.

An Instant Solution

One of the best ways to deal with this is through dermal fillers. This procedure provides almost zero downtime and instant results.

With dermal fillers, a solution is injected into a very specific part of the skin. The injected material will provide body or volume to that part of the skin. For wrinkly areas such as laugh lines or the corners of the lip, the skin is once again stretched out by the additional volume. That’s why it’s also a great way to achieve fuller lips. Pockmarks, which leaves small indentations on the skin, may also benefit from dermal fillers. This can restore the smoothness of the skin by elevating the depressed areas.

Different from Botox

Dermal fillers do not replace Botox because they differ greatly in the way they affect the skin. While dermal fillers create volume, Botox paralyses targeted muscles. This stops these muscles from overworking and overstretching the attached skin, making the skin less likely to develop wrinkles.

Because of their courses of action, Botox and dermal fillers work great together. The dermal fillers will take care of excess wrinkles and restore suppleness in specific regions of the face while Botox will prevent further development of wrinkles and other unwanted features.

At the Smile Spa, we use Juvederm hyaluronic acid as our derma filler fluid.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance in the face. It is also often seen in many popular moisturising products due to its ability to attract water. When injected into the skin, it will attract water to provide volume to the specific part of the face.

For both Botox and dermal fillers, the results are visible almost immediately, and they last for up to four months.
